Edwin Hubble

Edwin Hubble was one of the great astronomers of the 20th century. His work made the Universe a bigger place. He proved that the Universe is constantly expanding. Hubble also discovered that ours was not the only galaxy in space. Have you ever heard of the Hubble space telescope? It was named after him. It's one of the first telescopes to orbit the Earth.

Born: November 20, 1889
Died: September 28, 1953
Birthplace: Marshfield, Missouri
Position: Astronomer with the Mount Wilson and Palomar observatories
Education: Ph.D., University of Chicago
Known for: proving that the Milky Way was not the only galaxy in the Universe and that the Universe is expanding

Hubble's other careers were:

butterfly collector and writer

boxer and lawyer

cashier and artist

Correct!

Believe it or not, Hubble was also a lightweight boxer and a lawyer before turning to astronomy.

Hubble's Law -- that the distances between galaxies are constantly increasing -- made it possible to calculate:

the age of the Universe

what galaxies are made of

how big the Universe will get

Correct!

Working backward, scientists used Hubble's Law to determine that the Big Bang occurred about 13 billion years ago.

Edwin Hubble grouped galaxies according to their shape.

?

Fact

Hubble was the first to categorize galaxies by shape. Astronomers still use these shapes to define galaxies: elliptical, spiral, and irregular.

“

I chucked the law for astronomy, and I knew that even if I were second-rate or third-rate, it was astronomy that mattered.
