The Sea Ice is Melting

The Issue: The degradation of sea ice habitats is a huge problem for polar bears. Without sea ice, polar bears can't hunt or give birth. But there are ways we can help.

[Ellison]Hello, I'm Ellison.
[Gideon]I’m Gideon.
[Ajai]and I'm Ajai.
[Ellison] We're a group from the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. While we're here we would like to inform you about habitat degradation.
[Gideon] But what is habitat degradation?
[Ajaij] Habitat degradation is when the quality of a habitat has decreased, making it unable to support some or all of the species living there.
[Gideon] Can you give me some examples? What habitats are being destroyed?
[Ellison] Lots of habitats are being destroyed, but today we're just going to focus on the sea ice. The sea ice is melting because we produce things like carbon dioxide into the air, it warms up the temperature which causes sea ice to melt which floods various habitats.
[Ajai]When sea ice melts polar bears don't have a place to give birth and hunt, but how do we help? We need to do something about it.
[Ellison] We can help our furry friends stay afloat by preventing air pollution and planting trees.
[Gideon]We can also ride in electric cars, use mass transit, turn off lights, or even write letters to large factories asking them to go green. To help stop this problem we set up a fundraiser benefiting an organization called International Fund for Animal Welfare.
[Ellison] Save the sea ice!
[Ajai] Save the polar bears!
[Gideon] Save all the animals in their habitats!
