OLOGY CARD 119
Series: Animal

Bengal tiger

This mighty member of the cat family is a powerful predator. It can leap up to 30 feet in the air, climb trees, and even swim. Tigers aren't picky carnivores. They will eat critters as small as a mouse but prefer larger prey, even a meal as big as a one-ton water buffalo! In 1920, there were roughly 100,000 tigers in the world. Today, there are fewer than 4,000.

Scientific name: Panthera tigris tigris
Size: 4 to 9 feet long
Weight: 395 to 570 pounds
Habitat: forests of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other surrounding countries
Diet: birds and mammals
Characteristics: powerful jaws; reddish-orange fur with black stripes
Threats: habitat destruction and overhunting

A baby tiger is called a:

cub

joey

pup

Correct!

Baby tigers are called cubs. A group of cubs is called a litter. Cubs cannot open their eyes until about 14 to 16 days after they're born, so they're completely dependent upon their mothers for survival.

The stripes on a tiger's body help it:

run faster

scare away predators

camouflage among trees and tall grasses

Correct!

Camouflage is an adaptation that some animals use to blend in with their habitats. Tigers' stripes help them hide among trees and grasses so they can pounce on their prey from behind.

A Bengal tiger can chase its prey over long distances.

Fiction

Tigers can run only short distances. That's why they need to hide in the forest before they sneak up on their prey. Tigers travel up to 37 miles per day in search of food.
