From Marcus Bloch's 12-volume encyclopedia of fishes (1782-1795)
Featuring scientific illustrations spanning five centuries, the new exhibition Natural Histories: 400 Years of Scientific Illustration from the Museum’s Library explores the integral role illustration has played in scientific discovery through 50 striking, large-format reproductions from seminal holdings in the Museum Library’s Rare Book collection.

The exhibition is curated by Tom Baione, Harold Boschenstein Director of Library Services at the Museum.
Natural Histories showcases images by artists including Albrecht Dürer, Joseph Wolf, Moses Harris, John Woodhouse Audubon, and Maria Sibylla Merian.
The images you'll see in the Natural Histories exhibition are reproduced from volumes in the Museum's Rare Book Collection, which includes more than 14,000 books and folios, some dating to the 1400s.
