Darwin Public Programs at the Museum

In conjunction with Darwin, the Museum has developed a rich array of public programs that reflect the many dimensions of Charles Darwin as an explorer and naturalist. A series of provocative lectures and panel discussions cover many aspects of Darwin and his theory of evolution, including a November 19 panel with Darwin's great-great-grandson Randal Keynes (author of Darwin, His Daughter, and Human Evolution), noted Darwin scholar David Kohn, and Niles Eldredge, curator of the exhibition. A December 1 panel with leading scholars moderated by NBC's Robert Bazell that examine Charles Darwin's enduring legacy and his continuing impact on science and society.

Another panel on March 16 will be moderated by Krista Tippett, host of American Public Media's Speaking of Faith, public radio's weekly national conversation about belief, meaning, ethics and ideas. This panel discusses how, for many scientists, their religious beliefs complement, rather than conflict, with their pursuit of science.

Engaging children and family programs include hands-on workshops, performances, live animals, and film. Special highlights include a family festival introducing visitors to some of the cultures Darwin encountered on his historic five-year voyage aboard the HMS Beagle.

Companion Book

The exhibition is accompanied by Darwin: Discovering the Tree of Life, a richly illustrated tribute to the life and ideas of one of the most enduring thinkers of the 19th century, published by W.W. Norton. The 288-page publication, written by exhibition curator Niles Eldredge, contains 100 illustrations and photographs. The book explores the everyday artifacts of Charles Darwin's life, his notebooks, and early manuscripts, and presents a comprehensive study of Darwin's challenging intellectual and personal journey. Darwin: Discovering the Tree of Life is available in the Museum Shop at the American Museum of Natural History in a hardcover edition for $35.00.

The Darwin Shop

Accompanying the exhibition is a special Darwin Shop on the third floor that offers visitors a large selection of unique merchandise inspired by Darwin's life and times, including his voyage around the world aboard the HMS Beagle, as well as a wide array of unusual items and gifts: magnifying glasses, wooden and brass walking sticks, a ship's deck chronometer, compasses, and even toys for children including a Darwin finger puppet and a large stuffed Galápagos tortoise. The Darwin Shop will be open during the run of the exhibition.

AMNH Expeditions Offers Voyages to the Galápagos Islands

The American Museum of Natural History's AMNH Expeditions offers two fascinating voyages to the Galápagos Islands in 2006 to celebrate the Darwin exhibition: "Galápagos Islands and Machu Picchu" (January 23-February 4, 2006) and "A Family Adventure in the Galápagos Islands" (June 18-27, 2006). Also, a special two week tour with exhibition curator Niles Eldredge and Darwin scholar David Kohn is planned for January, 2007. Travelers view up close, in one of the most fascinating natural history regions in the world, land and marine iguanas, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, finches, and the giant tortoises that inspired Darwin's evolutionary thoughts. The Family Adventure in the Galápagos Islands is a ten-day tour of 11 islands aboard the first-class 90-passenger ship Santa Cruz. During "Galápagos Islands and Machu Picchu," travelers explore the islands for five days before continuing their journey to Peru, a country of magnificent landscapes and ancient Inkan ruins.
