Gabon's pristine rain-forest rivers hold an immense variety of fish. Dr. Melanie Stiassny was part of an international scientific expedition that went to Gabon to study this freshwater biodiversity.

"These fish are our early-warning system," explains Dr. Stiassny. "Their health warns us of threats to the water and the environment." Logging and other human activities now threaten this ecosystem.

What the scientists learn from the fish of Gabon will help protect the freshwater so essential to life on Earth.
