As the caravan of jeeps and trucks winds through the desert, the team watches the local wildlife. Every day on our travels, the team sees animals.
camels
There are many large mammals, including camels, horses, argali sheep, and wild asses, which are a kind of donkey.
horses
Beyond Ulaanbaatar, the horse is still the main means of transportation in Mongolia. Children learn to ride when they are as young as three years old, and Mongols have a reputation for being the best horse riders on Earth.
gazelles
Often the caravan passes a herd of hundreds of gazelles. The gazelles sometimes weave back and forth in front of the fastest jeep, even when it’s driving 30 miles per hour. The Mongolians explain the gazelles’ odd behavior as a strategy to avoid being surrounded by a pack of wolves.
lizards
The most common animals in the Gobi Desert are birds and small lizards.
