Along the way, the expedition team occasionally passes tent-like structures, called gers. These temporary homes belong to nomad families who travel through the desert with their sheep.

greeting nomads

When the expedition team meets up with nomads, Dash usually talks first. He greets the nomads by saying “sain baina uu?” (This means, “How are you?”)

Take a picture!

When visiting gers, we sometimes take Polaroid pictures of the young kids and give them to their parents. The families appreciate these gifts and proudly display them in their traveling homes.

Polaroids become family heirlooms!

nomad kids grow up

We regularly see pictures of the children we knew as infants adorning a place of honor in the gers. Now these kids are accomplished horse people, helping with the herds.
