This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Margaret Mead (1901-1978). At the beginning of the 21st century, she still holds the title as the world's most famous anthropologist. The American Museum of Natural History honors her contributions to anthropology and image-making and her role as a public intellectual.
The Margaret Mead Hall of Pacific Peoples, on the Museum's third floor, was recently refurbished and pays homage to research Mead conducted in the Pacific. From October through May 2002, a photo exhibition in the Akeley Gallery will feature work she produced with her friend and collaborator, Ken Heyman, for the 1965 publication "Family." In a related anniversary, the annual Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival celebrates its 25th year from November 2-10, selections from which will travel nationally and internationally to more than 25 cities.
