Besides yearbook signings, prom, and hanging out with friends, two high school seniors are preoccupied with defending their decision to enlist in the U.S. Army. Unable to afford college, Anthony and Tim hope military service will provide them with a better future. Convinced they’ve made the right choice, they argue with war-wary girlfriends, friends, family, and the community at large. Intercut with conversations between traveling Americans and natives of Istanbul, Belgrade, Hiroshima, and Ho Chi Min City, the boys’ arguments for serving their country weaken even as their report date nears.
