2026 Margaret Mead Filmmaker Awards
On Sunday, May 3, Maya Annik Bedward received the 2026 Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award for her film, Black Zombie.
Director Pete Muller received a special jury mention for Bucks Harbor.
Mead 2026 also presented its third annual Audience Award—which is selected by festival attendees—to Pete Muller for Bucks Harbor.

The three-day celebration took place from Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3, 2026, and presented storytelling and documentary films from diverse voices near and far.

Special Jury Mention: Bucks Harbor
The Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award recognizes documentary filmmakers who embody the spirit, energy, and innovation demonstrated by anthropologist Margaret Mead in her research, fieldwork, films, and writings.
The award is selected by a jury and given to a filmmaker whose feature-length documentary displays artistic excellence and originality in storytelling technique while offering a new perspective on cultures and communities. Filmmakers with works making their New York premieres at the festival are eligible.
2026 Mead Audience Award: Bucks Harbor
The Audience Award, voted on by Margaret Mead Film Festival attendees, celebrates the power of community engagement and the diverse perspectives that enrich the cinematic experience, fostering a vibrant dialogue between filmmakers and their audience. Films making their New York premiere at the festival are eligible.

Alice Apley
Alice Apley is executive director of Documentary Educational Resources (DER), an organization that champions the creation, circulation, and preservation of documentary film and media. At DER, Apley oversees the curation, marketing, and exhibition of nearly 900 titles, leads the organization’s filmmaker services program, and advises filmmakers on works-in-progress.
Robert Y. Chang
Robert Y. Chang is the co-producer of POV, the longest-running independent documentary showcase on American television. Chang has served as programmer, panelist, and reviewer for a range of film festivals, foundations, and funders of the arts and received his Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from NYU, with research on the intersection of religion and media.
Brittany Shyne
Brittany Shyne is an award-winning filmmaker and cinematographer whose films explore the complexity of everyday life, examining themes of personal history, alienation, and modernization. Her debut feature, Seeds, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Award, and was shortlisted for the 2026 Academy® Awards. Seeds made its New York premiere at the Margaret Mead Film Festival in 2025.
