Research Interests

Dr. Steven Jaret is a planetary geologist who believes Earth is a planet too! His areas of interests primarily are in high temperature mineralogy, petrology, and isotope geochemistry. His approach starts in the field, but also involves lots of detailed lab based techniques. This includes Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy at the small scale as well as trace element and isotope geochemistry to determine sources and ages of geologic events.

Dr. Jaret focuses his research in two areas: 1) meteorite impact structures on Earth as analog for other planets and 2) geology and geochronology of New York and nearby New England.

Dr. Jaret is also a dedicated teacher and science communicator. He feels very strongly that as scientists we have a duty to actively and effectively work towards getting our message across to learners of all kinds in both formal and informal education. As such he has worked with undergraduate and high school students in the labs, given causal science talks to non-scientists, and teach science communication courses for scientists and researcher.
