Monumental presents 12 artworks by James Hart, one of the most prominent Northwest Coast artists in Canada.

The exhibition features a special installation of 3 WatchMen (c. 2020), a 7-foot-tall monumental pole, alongside jewelry and other artworks.

James Hart, whose work spans traditional wood carving, jewelry, and innovative bronze casting, combines traditional Haida design with contemporary artistic expression.  A media piece in the exhibition explores his work on 3 WatchMen, his legacy, and his family’s tradition of art-making:

Monumental also features Shark Bracelet (c. 1890) by influential Haida artist and chief Charles Edenshaw (ca. 1839–1924), Hart’s great-great-grandfather.

Hart, whose full name is James Hart Edenshaw, is a Chief of the Stastas Eagle Clan and carries the ancestral name and title 7IDANsuu, a name passed down for generations and previously carried by Charles Edenshaw.
