[STRING HEAVY ORCHESTRAL MUSIC PLAYS]
Close-up on a small, controlled fire on a pile of dry grass.
The camera pans up to two people, an elderly man and a younger woman, kicking at the pile and adding dry grass to the mound. They are standing on a misty, grassy hill.
The young woman picks up a long stick and leans against it.
[MUSIC CONTINUES, BELLS ARE HEARD CLANGING SOFTLY]
Cut to the elderly man, a shepherd, walking along a thin mountainous path and holding a walking stick. A dog trots behind him and a herd of sheep graze in front of him. The mountains ahead are shrouded in mist.
Close-up profile of the shepherd who wears a beret and a lime-green and black zip-up jacket.
[MUSIC SWELLS]
Close-up on the small fire on dry grass, now just embers with billowing smoke rising from it. Many sheep are visible in the background but are obscured by the rising smoke.
Cut to the mountains toward the end of sunset, now mostly dark with streaks of pink and orange in the sky in the upper right corner.

When night descends on the misty French Pyrenees, an age-old beast emerges, and an elderly shepherd must defend his flock. In 1996, the French government began reintroducing near-extinct brown bears into the woodsy region. Now, the uptick in bears is imperiling local livestock. Presented as a uniquely modern conundrum for French farmers amid a shrinking agricultural industry, The Shepherd and the Bear examines the ancient relationship between humans and nature.
The screening will be followed by a talkback with director Max Keegan and producer Elizabeth Woodward, moderated by Director of the Center for Biodiversity Conservation at the American Museum of Natural History Ana Porzecanski.
Co-presented with The Climate Museum.
