There are eleven official languages in South Africa, yet the most successful comedians there perform in English. Speaking their vernacular languages, “vernac” comedians show how specific words are key to nailing the punch line and unveil the racial and sexist biases set against their native tongues. Laughter is universal, but the jokes are intimately tied to language and politics.

Join us for a Q&A with filmmakers Hannah Rafkin and Meg Robbins after the screening!
