Research Interests

John Gatesy studies the systematics and evolution of vertebrates by integrating fossil and molecular data, with a focus on Cetartiodactyla (whales, even-toed hoofed mammals).  Current research includes a detailed characterization of genomic features that illuminate major transitions in the evolution of Cetacea (whales), comprehensive systematic analysis of genomes from most extant species in this group, and development of simple methods for detecting conflicts and congruence among hundreds of genes in phylogenomic reconstructions.  The primary thrust of this work is to use synthetic analyses of diverse data to provide a detailed, reliable account of evolutionary history and to determine the best approaches for achieving this goal.
