Research Interests
Dr. Herman studies the systematics of rove beetles (Staphylinidae). Currently Dr. Herman is focusing on the subfamily Paederinae, a predaceous group with about 220 genera and 6,000 species. The subfamily occurs in most parts of the world and most species live in humus and ground litter. Dr. Herman made pioneering use of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) in his studies of genus Bledius. These beetles are found worldwide, burrow in moist sand, and feed on interstial algae. The SEM helped reveal structural details of the mouthparts that were useful in the classification of the group. His use of the SEM continues. Dr. Herman’s recent field work in Vietnam and Nicaragua to Argentina for his studies of the Paederinae augments his prior extensive work in North and South America and Iran.
