Our Family Tree

Modern humans are the only remaining descendants of a group that once had many members. Over the past six or seven million years, our distant ancestors adapted to different habitats and many distinct human species emerged. Fossils provide a record of this deep and varied history. Our understanding of the place of each species in human evolution is represented here as a “family tree,” extending left to right, from our distant past to today.
