The deep-sea is the largest environment on Earth, yet we have only explored 5% of this extreme habitat. Dr. Brugler is a deep-sea evolutionary biologist that uses DNA to reveal new species of black coral, which are found 8600 meters beneath the surface and can be thousands of years old. Hear exciting stories from his recent research cruises, and find out about his most recent exploration of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary off of the Mexican coast. That research will also be live online from August 28–September 1.
About the Speaker
Mercer Brugler, Associate Professor NYC College of Technology, CUNY and Research Associate, AMNH.
Mercer is an Associate Professor at NYC College of Technology (CUNY). Mercer runs a molecular lab at the American Museum of Natural History where high school students and undergraduates are submerged in deep-sea evolutionary biology. Mercer is also an adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU's School of Professional Studies (Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies), an adjunct Lecturer for Columbia University's E3B Program, and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History (Washington DC).
Audience
As a reminder, this event is open to 10-13-year-olds, accompanied by an adult. Students without an adult present will not be permitted to enter the event.
