Winter Ceremonies

Part of Northwest Coast Hall.

The Winter Ritual of the Kwakwaka’wakw was enacted by members of a secret society. The object of the rites was to obtain the protection of a supernatural being for an uninitiated youth, who then became a member of the secret society. The most powerful of these supernatural beings was the Cannibal Spirit, who votaries were supposed to have devoured human flesh.

Some of the regalia used in these rites is displayed in this case.
