Meet Eva Baron, a Tongan transgender woman, or leiti, and beauty-pageant contestant. In Tonga, leitis often live in shelters and are expelled from their homes as teenagers. When Eva enters the Miss Galaxy 2016 pageant, she is instructed to pack her bags and move to the local shelter. Fiercely determined, she sets off on a journey to become her true self—with a little inspiration from Tina Turner along the way

Activate: My Perspective

“I want my film to inspire others like me to render their own stories. I want my film to encourage and support others like me to know that theyʻre not alone on their journey. I want my film to educate and inform others who do not identify with my journey to consider the potential ways that our respective human experiences and fragilities coincide with that of others. Likewise I want the positive elements of the story presented to fortify the hearts and minds of all those who watch it. Making this film has activated within me the desire to be even more tenacious about the integrity and honesty of story rendered.”
