Adventures in Science Classes

Adventures in Science (AiS) classes introduce children from Pre-K to Grade 5 to a wide variety of scientific disciplines through thought-provoking, hands-on investigations and interactive tours of Museum exhibits.

One-day and three-day workshops are listed below. Your child must be in the appropriate grade in order to participate in the program. Information about dates, times, and cost of programs is available in the individual event listings. Classes are offered during the school year.

Refund Policy and Cancellations 

To receive a full refund (100%), you must cancel at least 30 days before the start of the program. To receive a partial refund (50%), you must cancel at least 15 days before the start of the program. If you cancel less than 15 days before the start of the program, you will not receive a refund. To cancel your registration in any of our programs, please call Central Reservations at 212-769-5200.

GeoDiscoveries: Rocks, Minerals, and More

These workshops are designed for adult involvement. A parent or caregiver must accompany each child. If multiple children are registered together for the same workshop (e.g., twins, siblings, cousins), there must be one adult for each child. Children who are not registered for the program may not attend. 

 

Unexpectedly beautiful, rocks are much more than just jagged stones under our feet. Discover different types of rock, examine the intricate structures of minerals under a microscope, and learn how to see the world through the eyes of a geologist.

These workshops are designed for adult involvement. A parent or caregiver must accompany each child. If multiple children are registered together for the same workshop (e.g., twins, siblings, cousins), there must be one adult for each child. Children who are not registered for the program may not attend. 

 

What is the recipe for a rock? Why do crystals have so many different shapes? Explore the small details resulting from the big processes that create jewels and pebbles alike.

BioAdventures: Life of a North American Forest

Selections are day-long explorations with hands-on investigations using Museum halls, collections, and research. Children are dropped off in the morning and bring their own lunch. 

 

 

Can you see the forest for the trees? Explore the inner workings of the trees around you, the variety of forests in North America, and how they collectively tell the story of an ecosystem.

Selections are day-long explorations with hands-on investigations using Museum halls, collections, and research. Children are dropped off in the morning and bring their own lunch. 

 

 

Millions of years ago, dinosaurs took to the skies—but they were not alone! Come look up into the Mesozoic sky and meet the variety of animals that achieved flight in the Age of Dinosaurs.

These workshops are designed for adult involvement. A parent or caregiver must accompany each child. Twinkling in the night sky, stars have fascinated people throughout history. Explore nearby constellations and the edges of the Milky Way as you learn about red stars, blue stars, and more.

These workshops are designed for adult involvement. A parent or caregiver must accompany each child. Travel through space and time as you learn how stars in the night sky have played a role in ancient human cultures, and explore how modern astronomy helps us understand the formation and future of these celestial bodies.

AstroExplorers: Robots in Space

Selections are day-long explorations with hands-on investigations using Museum halls, collections, and research. Children are dropped off in the morning and bring their own lunch. 

 

 

With an active rover on Mars, a spacecraft orbiting Jupiter’s poles, and probes sampling the surface of asteroids, robots are on the frontlines of space exploration. Learn the basics of robotics and programming as you build and operate your own robot.
