SCCS-NY 2023

Fourteenth annual conference - October 4–6, 2023

The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation and its partners invited students, postdocs, and early-career professionals to take part in the 14th annual Student Conference on Conservation Science – New York (SCCS-NY), held both virtually and on-site at the Museum.

As a part of the only international series of conservation conferences featuring students, SCCS-NY provides opportunities for emerging scientists to professionally network, gain experience, and present and get feedback on their work. Interactions with peers as well as leaders in science, policy, and management will encourage collaborations, inspire further research, and create lasting professional connections.

2023 Plenaries

Building an Impactful Career as an “ologist”

Plenarist: Dr. Nyeema C. Harris, Knobloch Family Associate Professor of Wildlife and Land Conservation, Yale School of the Environment

In an era of rapid environmental change, science plays a critical role in securing a sustainable future. What questions are asked but equally important in the science enterprise is how science is conducted and by whom. As an applied ecologist in academia, I reflect on transformative milestones during my training trajectory and how those experiences influenced building my own research program. With impact as the guiding principle, I demonstrate how I intersect my identity and value system into my professional portfolio. Ultimately, career success in science requires the scientists to operate with authenticity, passion, and commitment.

Careers Panel: Exploring Diverse Paths in Conservation

Panelists: Ingrid Haeckel, Ashik Rahaman, and Hara Woltz

The panelists, moderated by CBC Biodiversity Informatics Director Dr. Mary Blair, discussed their career paths, shared challenges, and gave advice to conference participants.
